CanterburyBooks.co.uk is just starting to raise money for a charity/NGO "Read International" soon at JustGiving.com.
Read International won an award presented by the Institute of Fund Raising. Read International hold book collections and donation days. They are coordinated by their student volunteers, who then sort all the books received to ensure they send only the best quality and most relevant ones out to East Africa. Those that don’t fit the bill are sold to raise funds for shipping the good stuff. As a last resort we will recycle what’s left – we never landfill anything. Another excellent non-profit organization is Room to Read, which aims to improve literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world. It focuses on working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments. Room to Read develops literacy skills and the habit of reading among primary school children, and supports girls in completing secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond. The other charity we are aiming to raise money for is Booktrust: an independent UK-wide charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to enjoy books. The written word permeates their activity and helps to fulfil a vision of inspiring a lifelong love of books for all. Books and narrative – such as storytelling and writing through the web – can entertain and make us laugh, inform and satisfy our curiosity, or provide escape into the imaginative world.
